Unexpected Woes

Working on UC this morning.  Trying to get my heart into it, but I'm not sure it's working.  Too much negativity has surrounded it at this point, and it makes it very hard to get into it.  Normally I'd read the thread, catch up on reviews and what-not to get in the mood to write the next chapter, but that no longer works.  I may have to stop reading any UC related comments at all until this story is done.  At this point I do not enjoy writing it.  I will finish it, because I can't leave something undone, but I don't enjoy it any more.  The snide side of me is almost tempted to just post the remaining outline and call it done, but I wouldn't do that to you, I swear.

With Offside getting close to the end, I'm going to focus on UC just to get it done before I write anything else.  Maybe that will help, maybe it won't.  Either way - don't worry - it will be finished.  I really appreciate everyone who has hung on this long.  I know it's frustrating for all those awaiting chapters that are taking longer for me to finish.  I just keep deleting crap and re-writing it because it's not flowing at all.  There is going to be a major change in the story in 2-3 chapters, and I hope that will make it all start flowing again.  In the meantime, it's taking forever to get it written.

Hang in there, if ya can.  I've at least got some of it done, and still hope to get it off to beta in the next day or two.  Unless I delete it all and start over again!  LOL

  1. Geez, Savvy, I'm so sorry. I totally understand where you're coming from, and seriously, I think it's borderline tragic that the really good writers out there allow a bunch of negative nellies who can't deal with their fic not being all sunshine and rainbows to ruin it for the rest of us.

What I don't understand is why people have to be so hateful when they don't like the way a story is going. Don't like it? Don't read. It's that simple. Or maybe, just maybe you should have some faith in the writer to do what's right for the story and her characters. Screaming about it before it's done won't make things any better for anyone involved.

Believe me when I say that those of us who want intelligent fic with controversial, inspired story lines such as yours are still out there and fully support you.

But yes - stop reading the thread. Stop reading the reviews you receive. Do whatever you have to do to find your way back into this story. It's one of the best I've read in a long while, and I love it - and you for sharing it with us.

    Big hugs.

  2. I hope you finish UC.  It really is a very good story.  I wish I waited until the story was finished before I started to read it.  something is telling me that if I did, I wouldn't have been as shocked and upset about some stuff that happened in the story as of now. I actually have a theory about what has been happening recently in this story. I am not referring to the tea, by the way.

  3. A lot of people are being negative towards the story and I feel bad that it has made not you enjoy writing this story as much !! Seeing as I'm a huge history buff I think you have done very well with it, back then women married to kings did not get the Cinderella happily ever after crap that was life and they had to deal with it I really enjoy UC and is by far one of my favorites to read you have kept it realistic and I liked that !!
Just wanted to say thank you for writing and hope you can somewhat enjoy writing this story again

  4. Aww....I'm sorry Shay.  That's terrible and I can see where it would affect you all of the negative comments.  I try not to be negative even though I don't like what is happening sometimes but some of the people that read don't really care that there is and actual human writing the story and get very mean and I apologize again if I ever said anything that got you upset which that is not me normally.  I would never attack your writing  just because I did not like how the story was going.  I think you are an excellent writer and please don't read the comments anymore because I want you to continue writing this story as you originally saw it!
thanks Savage and keep your chin up!!

  6. I'm always here to help!  I have stuck to this story even when it got tough and I will read it to the end.  Maybe you need another story like CBWR? or Offside to help you out!  Let me know if I can do anything!

  9. I find it amazing that people are being so negative about this story.  You are an amazing writer and your story is just that YOUR STORY.  It should be written how you want it, and people can either like it or not like it.  Done.  Ignore the haters, write what you want to, because that's what true fans like to read: the stuff that comes from your heart, without any influence from negative and hateful comments.  I think not reading any UC related stuff is a great idea.  Write what you want and finish it how you want.  We will enjoy it.

  10. I wonder who wastes their time writing snide comments on fanfiction.
It's such a welcome relief to read your stories after a long day of mind-numbing work!
Keep your head up! We'll wait as long as it takes!

  11. So very sorry to hear that...not that I ever understood what all this negative fuss was about (as you are not the first writter who didn't write their story as the readers wanted them to...duh), but it's really sad to hear that you've lost the enthusiasm to write YOUR won story...and a really big thank you from my side here, that you're dictated enough to your readers (&stories) to finish it when you fell like that about it...truly amazing! I hope it might get beter again for you, all the best,

  12. Savage,

You are an experienced good writer with more than 10 stories now. I totally understand what you mean. When you say you receive a lot of negativity, you have to ask yourself the question, why is it alot and what do you consider negativity? Why is it happening with this story more than other stories you have writen. Your stories are all edgy and controversal, thats what makes them unique. However, You have to distinguish ignorant vile comments from those who constructively give opinons as why/how events are happening and characters are behaving in a certain way. No, it is not only people who like rainbows and sunshine in a story who have been critic of some of the UC wrting. I speak of myself. I have read all your stories and even it was hard at times I loved them the same. I love UC, i knew the introduction of the concubine (Angela as is the case) was a very delicate subject, very different from slavery, abuse, prostitution or addicton. It was like stepping into a virgin territory, going where nobody had gone depending on how humans see certain aspects of life. Anyway, I didnt like it had to come to that, involving certain characters and reactions, but I accepted it. I even loved how you described in in chapter 26. But I have to admit, your last 2 chapters has been weak. It shows you are stressed, or tired and too much affected from reviews. The only problem i have is jumping timelines while vaguely touching important subjects which IMO needed more work and place in your story telling, and the logical continuity of character evolution. Believe me, I totally have faith in you. As i have always said you know how to make your characters expressive and emotonal. I havent felt it lately, sorry. I hope you understand I am not one of those negative peeps. No way. I would be very sad if you dont continue this story or just rush to finish it without much of a good writing. It would be really sad. What i would say though is, either stop reading all the reviewes and do your thing, the way you always do, or discard the insultng, agressive posts and intelligently take  the best from the ones who seem honest in their criticism. I would say take all the time you need to relax, recollect your thoughts and inspiration in order to deliver excellent chapters like its always the case with you. What can i say? If you could take the last 2 chapters back and re-write them? But thats done now. I hope you extend the story a little further than 40 chapters. Whats gonna happen in 10 chapters left? a lot needs to be happen, but please do not rush where it is more important to explore and focus. We can wait, I can wait........ Good luck!

  13. Dear Savage,

I am very sorry that you feel this way. My firm belief is that the negative comments should not matter. You have a story to tell and there are many readers, who would like to read it. I also believe that the situation was used to demean and discourage a very popular author. The good thing about fanfiction on Internet is that the comments can't change anything and really don't matter at all. You can just ignore them and keep doing what you do so well. I hope that you will feel better and I wish you all the best! :)

  14. I appreciate you continuing with this story after all the negativity.  I know that there are a bunch of readers who have quit or given up or bitch about everything at this point, but there are also a lot who have defended you and continue to be excited about this story.  So I'm glad that you aren't just quitting and giving in to those who want exactly that.

I was surprised to hear that it was all getting to you so much for you to be at the point of talking about finishing it or not at all.  I mean, I'm no author, but even I know that if you choose to write something like this, there will be a huge backlash and many, many, many pissed off readers.  And if you've been in this fandom any time at all, you know that it can easily turn into a petty, rude, not-shy-about-stating-feelings bunch.  I mean, I would think that you would have known exactly what would happen as soon as you outlined the part where Edward chose to do what he did, so I guess I expected that you would have expected the exact response you got from your readers, and so I'm not sure why you're no longer enjoying the story.  It's still the same story you always planned and enjoyed.

I always wonder why more authors don't write their entire story first and then start posting, since it appears that this kind of situation happens pretty often, especially if the author knows what's coming in her story (i.e., certain character choices = certain reader response = an all-of-a-sudden disheartened, unencouraged author who no longer enjoys it and wants to or does quit).  Again, though, at least you're one of the stronger ones who decided to finish rather than quit.  So I thank you for that.

  15. A lot of your readers are still here honey. Reading everything you write and have been here a very long time. Did I necessarily care for the angst in UC, no, but I survived.

I am sorry that it is not a pleasure for you to write anymore. You do it because you want to, now it must feel like an obligation. Hang in there...........

  16. savage,

i am so sorry you are being so beaten down by the fandom at this point. Nobody deserves to be bullied for telling their story the way they see fit. It's disgraceful. I still am unable to wrap my head around why these disgruntled readers don't simply move on to a story that tickles their particular fancies.

It bears mentioning that I am actually one of the UC readers who has flounced temporarily. I keep up on your blog, as well as Offside updates, but will not be reading anymore of Unexpected Circumstances until the story is completed. Please understand that my decision was NOT because I don't approve of the plot progression you have chosen. Rather it is because struggles with infertility is a real trigger for me at this point in my life and because I've fallen in love with these characters I'd rather not dwell on the angst indefinitely whilst no ultimate resolution is readily available, if that makes any sense.

Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I hope you are able to look past the schoolyard bullying you have been the victim of. The fact is, and will always be, that Unexpected Circumstances is the product of YOUR imagination and any decision you have made regarding its content is the right decision because it is YOURS alone to make. I look forward to learning how it all turns out. Thank  you for putting yourself out there.

  17. I read this post a few hours ago and I had to mull it over for a while.  I get irritated when people post negative things to ffn authors.  My motto is that if you don't like it, for whatever reason, then don't read it.  There was a post a few weeks back that mentioned plot holes and poorly developed characters.  I disagreed with these comments but also felt like if the reader was looking for the highest quality story, she needed to go PURCHASE one.  This isn't to say I don't think Savage produces high quality stories because I do.  It's just that an ffn author isn't getting paid for her (or his) product and probably doesn't have the time or resources to make it perfect.  Most have full time jobs and families or school and write in their spare time for their own enjoyment.  I imagine you'd be hard pressed to find an ffn author who does not find flaws in her own stories that she wishes she could correct.  I do believe Savage appreciates constructive criticism because she cares about her stories and her readers and wants to be the best she can be.  That doesn't mean she should be subjected to a barage of negativity.  So here's my comment directly to Sav:  If the negativity about UC is getting you down, set it aside for a while.  I don't really want that to happen but I'd rather have to wait a month or two for the next chapter than for the situation to turn you away from ffn forever.  You write great stories.  There are authors out there who have written one great story and everything else they've done has been average at best.  Every single thing you've written has been great.  I'm no professional when it comes to literature but I know what I enjoy.  I don't see those flaws that the negative Nellies have mentioned.  So do what you need to do to keep it enjoyable for you and that in turn will make it enjoyable for us.  --Monique

  18. I totally agree with you. The story is a fictional one and depends on the author imagination and perception, but the moment you make it public you have to be prepared for lots of reactions, especially with this fandom and such controvercy. So, most of the readers react more to a story than the other because they are very passionate about it, or too way far gone in the story that it is just hard and shocking to give up at that point. Some of them of course are there to yell and scream and go against anything and anybody. But again, savage, either block the review button for the remander of the story or just deal with negativity in a way that it doesnt get to you. Believe me, you are not the first author to be subjected to this. Id rather you calm down and dont read anything, than continue to write chapters while you are upset or distressed.

  19. What the fuck ever. UC is awesome. You are awesome. I can wait for the inspiration to strike that makes the awesome. The idiots who keep throwing down negative vibes are just that. Tell them to go read a Danielle Steele novel is they want something fluffy wither perfectly flawless characters and a happy ending. vomit.

Keep on truckin! I love the twists in your stories and don't mind the wait at all. At least I know that you care about what you are writing enough to put time and energy into having it come out the way you want it to. It's not like this is your full time job. Don't let 15 year olds that have a 10:00pm curfew keep you down!

  21. Oh....this makes me so mad!  I had a bad feeling that all the negative comments were going to have an effect on the way the story went.  Savage, I LOVE the story; it's one of my all time favorites!  I have read lots of fanfic, and I have never shared any story with my husband or family, and I told them about this one back in the summer. They continue to ask me how it's going and are excited for me whenever there is a new teaser or update! I love all of your stories, but this one has really moved me more than your others, even Surviving Bella, which I sincerely loved. I will understand whatever you decide to do, but I hope, hope, hope you will dig deep and continue to write the amazing story you have started. Why don't you let someone filter the comments for you? Then you can just read the ones that are helpful to you, both emotionally and creatively. Hang in there and remember there are LOTS of readers who really care about this story more than we can express in words!

  28. Savage, you are brilliant and it's the honest truth. The people who are bitching about UC are the ones who like the trite typical shit that is boring as all get out. I love your stories because they are thoughtful and original and there is no emphasis on Edward's looks-a person can read he is a Greek god so many times before they feel the need to vomit. But, I digress, I hope you get back to enjoying your writing and I cannot wait for the next UC update!

  29. Think about the fact that Michael Sheen read from your story! That should be motivation enough to want to write it and keep it going. Perhaps he is still reading it!

  30. Savage,

I have never left a comment on here before, but I just wanted to tell you that I love everything you've done with UC! It is because the story isn’t just full of fluff that I am so crazy about it! Seriously the stories with true human suffering and sacrifice are the ones that I remember forever. And it's not easy for us [readers] to endure the sufferings of our beloved characters, but that's what makes an exceptional story. I think the harsher comments arise from the intense emotions people are experiencing for these characters. People really care about this story. You’ve touched our hearts!

That being said, do not let anyone influence you on this! You write whatever your heart desires! This is your story which you have graciously chosen to share with the world! And I would rather wait a year for your next post than read anything else! You go girl!

  32. so sorry UC has gotten so difficult to write for you. Wish the negative folks had the common sense just to realize if a story does not appeal to them on whatever level that may be, then don't read the damn thing. There are only a few other thousand ff they can pick from. I personally enjoy your style of writing. Keeps me on my toes cause never know for sure where you are going to go with a story.. I try to guess, and at times I am close and other times way off base. I love that your imagination takes your stories off the beaten path... I think you do an awesome job with your stories and I am so thankful you take the time to share your writings with all the family/work and other RL things you have to deal with.Take all the time you need. we loyal ones will be here for the long haul...

    ReplyDelete
  33. IDK, after the level of anxiety you have put your characters through, I can see you having a diffilcult time with the flow. Since the introduction of the concubine, I personally felt it would be diffilcult to reel it back in with some realism. Even though fiction, there is always a thread of realism, to me, that's what keeps a story going. Do we believe what is going on.

But for you to lose heart in your own story, not enjoy it, that is a problem. The negative is a result of the over the top anxiety with no real hope. People will respond as such. You've blogged your feelings many a time over this, and have blogged your feelings as well. You've blog your reasons too.

This isn't even about the story anymore, the story is secondary. This is about you as a writer and losing heart in your own story because of negastive comments? I find that more diffilcult to understand than any story you have ever written.

It is just sad on so many levels.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Shit really? You're losing heart? That's just sad and wrong. I thought the fuss would be over...I mean the thing with Angela was a few chappies ago and everyone who was going to stop reading would have done so at that time. There can't be new fuss surely?? I hope you're not getting harassed via pms and stuff...that is just wrong and ridiculous.
I thought that a huge amount of people are still really happy and reading UC. You know I can't read this story now...but that's my problem not yours. Don't listen to anyone. After the the shitstorm that was CBWR..which I thought you handled like an effing saint btw...I didn't think any of the negativity would get to you. You write controversial subjects and people have been upset at some point with all your stories. I thought you kind of expected it...it makes me think that maybe people really are still banging on about it to you..which seems like such a timewasting exercise.....I mean it's done right? It's not like you're going to rewrite your entire outline and then delete the last few chapters.
*Sigh*...I don't know really. I get so involved with these stories and I love them...I love to really debate them and no matter how upset I get with the characters I just don't understand the need to bash the author. I think sometimes people forget that writers are actual human beings with feelings. It's so easy to spew vitriol via the written word when the person isn't there face to face with you.
I'll admit to feeling so disappointed that I had to jump off this particular rollercoaster...but again...MY problem...not yours.
Take care of you...like I said...there seem to be many many many people who are still really into UC..you can't please all of us all the time. Ignore the horribleness.
    xx

  35. I just want to offer my encouragement.  I'm one of those that are in to UC for the long haul.  You're a fantastic writer.  Even the parts I didn't like were written extremely well.  I'm looking forward to the resolutions and will be patient.  If it's too angsty, I'll just take another break or read a fluffy story!

    Good Luck and Best Wishes!

  36. I'm so sorry you are feeling like this!  This is my favorite story right now, because of what the characters are going though and how well you write it out.  I think you have many more people that love this story than people that are upset about it; it's like customer service: people complain more than they compliment.  Please do not lose heart!  Your stories get me though my work days when I am away from home!  :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Im sorry that you're going through all of this. I hope nothing I said in my comment to your last post was taken the wrong way, because I didnt mean for any of it to be insults. I am a huge fan of your writing! Already since my last post, you can add CBWR? to the list of your stories Ive read. It had some tough parts too, just like most of your stories do. People can either understand that its part of the situation or find another author to enjoy. I dont get why the negativity is necessary.

Readers have to understand that UC is not set in modern times. They didnt have fertility drugs and procedures like IVF. And he is a King! In their perilous situation, they cannot afford not to have at least one son. If there was any other way, they would try that first. If they werent the future King and Queen, they would never even consider it. And you convey through your words, just how devestating it is for them to have to endure this. Its not like they're all "Oh well, do what you gotta do". It is KILLING them, but they have to think about whats best for the people before themselves.

Anyway, if people dont like the journey on which you are taking these amazing characters and cant get through the hard times to make it to the HEA, then they can MOVE ON!! I know you will still have many, many, MANY dedicated readers even once the weak ones are weeded out. We'll still be here when you decide you are in a good enough place to be able to continue with it. Thanks for writing.

  38. I know this is a heavy hard work to sink into but I know you'll pull us through to the light.  I think closing out outside influences is exactly what you need to do.  Just get alone with the characters and remember why you started writing their story to begin with.  This is agreat story and an important work.  It stands alone as literature.  Yes, some FF is just fun fiction but there is  a small percentage that is literature that will stand and your UC is just that if you don't drop the ball now.  I love these characters.  I love how you tell their story.  I love that my heart pounds and my blood races as I get carried away by the angst of it all because I have faith that you will bring the characters safely home.  I love everything you've written.  I have faith in your work.

  39. yes my dear we know that you dont care about UC  ,you completelly destroy it.it started as a very interesting story but you ruined it, you started writing other stories and you kinda abandon it.why dont you  try to be respectful to your UC  readers instead of ignore them .finish the damn story first and then start others.GROW UP

  41. As a sister of a writer (currently unpublished), I understand if you need to take a break.  I'm so in awe of your ability to create believable worlds, fantastically real characters, and twisted plots.  I love UC (even if I want to kill Aro myself), and will be ecstatic to receive the next chapter whether it's posted next week, next month, or next year.

  42. I love UC and love that you have the courage to write difficult stories. I will wait until you are ready and happy with the next update. I trust you completely and if I don't like how the story goes I will still appreciate the talent and entertainment that you have shared with me. Sending all positive writing thoughts your way.

  43. I'm so sorry to hear that you have lost enjoyment in writing this story. I know how that goes and it sucks, to speak plainly. I hope you are able to block out all the negativity around you and focus solely on the positive but I know that it's practically impossible (of the approx. 500 reviews I received on the latest MV chapter the one that sticks out in my mind is the really negative one. Why is it like that?!)
I have loved everyone of your stories and eventhough I have stopped reading UC for the moment (purely because I didn't want to get unintentional inspiration for my own historical fic) I do hope you are able to get back to it and your hoards of fans who support you, even when you make hard decisions concerning your characters and take them in directions that go against the grain. I say bravo for being brave enough and stick to your outline that you made from the start despite a very vocal group of nay-sayers.
I hope you find your fun again, because this is supposed to be a relaxing and enjoyable pass time for you and therefore if you feel like you need to put it on hiatus until you get your groove back, I say go for it. :) Your readers will understand.

  44. I'm sad that the negativity got into you... I understand foruns are an awesome way to discuss the plot and the characteres and have a word with the author! but people can get spoiled and use it to whine as babies... and not just once but countless times, they keep beaten the dead horse... I don't even go there anymore but I love your stories just because they are so unforeseeable and unique. I wish I could cheer you up... at least you know there are lots and lots of people here for you.

  47. Actually I think the reality of that situation in particular has to be (for me at least) one of the best angst points in the story, apart from the not-being-a-baby issue and it's wonderful how this one situation stems from that.

And for the times the story happens, it actually is very real. If you're reading with a xxi century mindset, maybe it will sound off, but then, and for royals, it's just the perfect way to go.
